June is almost upon us and striped bass and bluefish have made their presence felt in western
Long Island Sound.
One of the ways to target these fish is to locate schools of mossbunker and, if the baitfish are
agitated, cast surface plugs to the perimeter of the bait school. The bass or blues (or both) have
caused the hapless bunker to be forced to the top of the water column where they circle nervously in a defense mode. You can often cash in when this occurs.
Use spinning or conventional tackle rated for about 15 pound line and a short wire leader finished with a quality snap to facilitate changing lures. Although they work great, don't sacrifice those Tattoos Saltys, or other custom wooden baits to the toothy blues. Try the venerable Creek Chub Striper Strike or a Tsunami in bright colors like electro schoolbus instead.
By the way, if you don't locate a school of bunker while searching around in mid-sound, look for the widening circles in the water made by a gamefish slipping down from the surface. These fish are frequently in the mood to strike a popper.
Remember, "Release 'em. They'll grow on ya."
Tight lines,
Capt Steve
